AUGUST 3, 2007

The Council conducted two highly successful Florida Leadership Academies, June 24 – 29 and July 15 – 20 for 256 educators—Principals, AP’s and teacher leaders. The Academies are a FLDOE William C. Golden Program for School Leaders activity with generous support from these sponsors: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc., Darden Restaurants Foundation, Publix Super Markets Charities, Inc., Washington Mutual and The Lennar Foundation. The Breakers in Palm Beach, Water Color Inn in Santa Rosa Beach and the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort in Longboat Key gave luxurious getaway packages to fortunate Academy participants. Council Vice Chair Gene Marshall attended the Academies which were held in Tampa.

Council President and Executive Director, Dr. Elaine Liftin was invited to join and participate in the FCAT Assessment and Accountability Review Committee, formed by FLDOE Commissioner of Education Jeanine Blomberg. The next meeting for the group, which includes prominent district and state education leaders and government leaders, is slated for Aug. 8 in Orlando.

Are you an outstanding Principal who raised student achievement…empowered staff…engaged the community…participated in a Council activity? Then you may apply for the $10,000 Leonard Miller Principal Leadership Award. The Award is for the winner’s personal use. More information follows.

The Deborah L. Natansohn Foundation announced it will support the Council’s Executive PASS program with a generous annual donation to assist an Executive PASS principal at a South Florida school. The program’s goal is increased student achievement. Formed in February 2007, The Deborah L. Natansohn Foundation promotes the advancement of women in society and business through mentoring programs, educational partnerships, scholarships and community outreach. Before her untimely death in Oct. 2006, Ms. Natansohn - then President and Chief Operating Officer of Seabourn Cruise Line - had been working with her Executive PASS school. The program pairs local business leaders with Principals, and infuses business strategies into improvement efforts. The Principal selected for this grant will be recognized at the Deborah L. Natansohn Foundation gala in Ft. Lauderdale, Nov. 8th. For information on supporting this initiative, please contact Dawn Wilson at the Council, 954.727.9909.
