LEONARD
MILLER
Leonard Miller was the Chair of the South
Florida Annenberg Challenge up until the time of his death
in 2002. He was also a founder of the Council for Educational
Change, the successor organization. He believed:
“If Every Child Can Get a Quality Education, Every
Child Can Succeed.”
That belief is the foundation of the Council.
It draws strength from his extraordinary leadership, passion
for the welfare of children, and conviction that improvement
was possible. Mr. Miller also believed that Challenge “lessons
learned” must live on through the Council. “Once
we know what works,” he said, “we have to make
it happen.”
His legacy lives on through the Council
programs he started and the Council continues including: PASS,
the Principal Leadership Academy, the Accelerated School Administrator
Program, the Professional Development Initiative, and the
Principal Portal. He strongly believed, based on research
and insight, that Principal Leadership was the key to increasing
student achievement.
The Council Board established the annual
Leonard Miller Principal Leadership Award for $10,000 for
a Principal Leader from a South Florida Annenberg Challenge
or Council program school. (More information click here.)
This Award is just one tribute to his unwavering
commitment to students. We could never hope to adequately
immortalize his legendary work, but we can continue it, drawing
upon his inspiration. In his words:
“We must keep discovering better
ways to improve education so that schools and children can
benefit.”
